AALRR Hosts 20th Anniversary Employment Law Conference with over 1000 Participants

04.12.2019

On Thursday, March 28, 2019, Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo held its annual Employment Law Conference. This year’s conference theme, “Cheers to Twenty Years!”, commemorated the 20th anniversary of the full-day event, held every year since 1999. Since then, the conference has grown to become one of the largest employment law events in the state. This year’s turn-out was no exception, with over 1,000 participants in attendance.

The day of celebration and education kicked off with a presentation from Steve Cadigan, former Vice President of Talent at LinkedIn. “Cheers to Twenty Years” offered participants a chance to look at how employment law has evolved, but also to look forward at where the field is headed in the coming years. With the theme in mind, Mr. Cadigan’s session focused on the future of leadership in the digital era. Mr. Cadigan advises fast-growth tech companies like Twitter, Google, Eventbrite, GoPro and others, and his expertise in the field gave participants key insights into how to foster talent, manage Millennials, and much more.

The conference breakout sessions also took a look into what the future holds for employment law, and what participants need to know to build and maintain a workplace that is growing in the right direction. Topics included “Workplace Harassment: It’s About More than Sex”, “The War Against Independent Contractors”, and “Tackling Leave Laws”. Other sessions gave a general overview of significant cases and legislation employers need to know about, wage and hour issues most employers get wrong, and case studies outlining successful accommodation in the workplace.

The 2019 conference concluded with a talk from Dr. James Doti, Professor and President Emeritus of Chapman University, who offered a hopeful conclusion to “Cheers to Twenty Years” in a talk focused on how employers can prosper in a rapidly changing economy.

“AALRR’s Employment Law Conference has grown to become a premier event for California employers,” commented Paul Fleck, Managing Partner of AALRR’s Private Labor & Employment Group. “We celebrated the conference’s 20th anniversary by offering participants everything they’ve come to expect from this event—cutting-edge legal expertise, in-depth insights into topics that matter most to employers, and a healthy dose of laughter and community. We’re honored to see this event continue to grow year after year.”

Attendees at this year’s conference also had the opportunity of receiving a number of different credit hours from various organizations, including HRCA, SHRM, ASA, and MCLE credits with the State Bar of California.
