CERRITOS, Calif. - On Saturday, November 7, 2015, Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo (AALRR) co-sponsored the “Legal Eagles” of the Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) third annual Law Merit Badge Day at Loyola Law School. Law Merit Badge Day included presentations from lawyers and law enforcement officers and featured a special address from Steve Cooley, the former Los Angeles County District Attorney.
More than 125 Boy Scouts and adult leaders from Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura counties attended lectures at Loyola Law School’s Robinson Court Room covering legal history, civil law and criminal law. The lectures included diverse subjects ranging from the Code of Hammurabi to the development of the American jury system. Sessions were presented by law enforcement officers and practicing attorneys, including AALRR partner Joe Akrotirianakis, with an emphasis on how the Boy Scouts of America can be valuable in career development.
The day concluded with a mock trial presided over by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Connor (ret). Scouts performed the roles of prosecutor, defense counsel, witnesses and jurors.
The Legal Eagles is a group of legal professionals who support the efforts of the Boy Scouts’ Los Angeles Area Council to provide young people with a better understanding of the law in their lives and to promote future careers in law through presentation of the Law Merit Badge. Since November 2013, approximately 300 Boy Scouts have earned the Law Merit Badge through this annual event.
“We hope that, because of this event, Scouts will become inspired to pursue careers in law or law enforcement,” said Legal Eagle founding member Joe Akrotirianakis, himself an Eagle Scout.
