AALRR Co-Sponsors Second Annual Law Merit Badge Day for Boy Scouts at Loyola Law School
CERRITOS, Calif. — On Saturday, November 8, 2014, Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo (AALRR) sponsored the “Legal Eagles” of the Los Angeles Area Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), 2nd Annual Law Merit Badge Day at Loyola Law School. Law Merit Badge Day included presentations from lawyers and law enforcement officers and featured a special address from the Honorable Jacqueline Connor, Judge of the Superior Court, Ret.
More than 70 Scouts from Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura counties were invited to attend lectures at Loyola’s Girardi Advocacy Center on legal history, civil law and criminal law covering diverse subjects from the Code of Hammurabi to the development of the jury system. Sessions were presented by practicing attorneys and law enforcement officers, including AALRR partner Joe Akrotirianakis, with an emphasis on the value of Scouting in career development. The day concluded with a mock trial presided over by Judge Connor, in which Scouts performed the roles of prosecutor, defense counsel, witnesses, jury foreman, and jurors.
The Legal Eagles is a group of legal professionals who support the efforts of the Los Angeles Area Council BSA, to provide young people with a better understanding of the law in their lives and to promote future careers in law through presentation of the Law Merit Badge.
“We hope that, because of this event, Scouts will become inspired to pursue a career in law or law enforcement,” said Legal Eagle committee member Joe Akrotirianakis, himself an Eagle Scout.
