#CALPELRA2023: A Season for Gratitude and Resilience

CALPELRA's 2023 Annual Training Conference, the 48th annual CALPELRA conference, will be held in beautiful Monterey, California, the week of November 14 - 17.

AALRR partners Nate Kowalski & Laura Izon will speak at the 2023 CALPELRA Annual Training Conference. They will present...

Back By Popular Demand: Understanding and Avoiding Risks With Probationary Employees, Part II

(This session was very popular at the 2022 Conference and many people were unable to attend because there was standing room only.  To accommodate the demand, Nate and Laura propose to expand on their prior presentation such that the session would be appropriate for both prior and new attendees.)

This session is the next in the Probationary Employee series, which will continue focus on the issues particular to this group of often overlooked employees.  This session will assist Human Resources professionals with (1) advising and training their supervisors about the importance of probationary employee evaluation and feedback, (2) understanding the limitations, risks and procedural issues involved in releasing them from probation, and (3) avoiding some of the unfortunate pitfalls associated with these “at-will” employees, such as violating constitutional protections and inappropriately extending (or failing to extend) the probationary period.  The speakers, drawing on their decades of experience, will share best practices for creating and negotiating defensible policies and procedures for administering the probationary period and will highlight relevant case law and precedent.  The session will conclude with ample time for attendee questions.
