2022 IE SHRM Annual HR Conference - Innovate & Motivate
Inland Empire SHRM hosts its 2022 Annual Conference
Join attorneys William Betley, Carol Gefis, Ann Smith, Susan Steward, Thomas Lenz, and Bob Wenzel for a full day of training at the Inland Empire Society for Human Resource Management's Annual Conference. This conference, titled "Innovate & Motivate", is designed for all HR practitioners, from early career to the more experienced HR executive.
Multiple AALRR attorneys will present the latest news on current and emerging HR topics, including:
- You Can’t Say That! – Employee Expression in the Workplace
Today’s employees are more knowledgeable than ever with respect to both their rights and employer obligations in the workplace. Employees do not hesitate to express themselves on an individual and collective basis. This session will feature a thoughtful exchange concerning employee rights of speech and expression (both within and outside the workplace). -
Hiring in California: The New Reality
Hiring and retaining employees in California has never been more challenging. This session will present an overview of best practices for recruitment, candidate selection and vetting, onboarding documentation, and remote/hybrid work considerations and will offer strategies for mitigating potential risk for discrimination and other claims during the hiring process. - Sound Employee Discipline & Documentation Practices
Two important components for mitigating employer risk are consistent discipline and sound documentation. This session will provide insights into developing and executing effective disciplinary processes, drafting sound documentation that supports the discipline, and appropriate communication of the imposed discipline to the employee. This information can be utilized by managers and supervisors at all levels of an organization. - Disability 101: Reasonable Accommodation
One of the most frequent claims made against California employers is the alleged failure to provide reasonable accommodation to employees and applicants with a disability. This session will explore state and federal requirements and offer practical strategies to identify when an employer’s obligation to engage in the interactive process is triggered, if reasonable accommodation is required, and what constitutes a “reasonable” accommodation. This session will also provide practical guidance for addressing pandemic-related accommodation issues. - Conducting Effective Workplace Investigations
Effective workplace investigations are crucial to addressing many of the concerns faced by employers today. This session will explore important aspects of workplace investigations, including understanding when an investigation is required, utilizing proper interviewing techniques, assessing witness credibility, reaching a conclusion that is supported by the evidence, and preparing an appropriate investigative report. This session will also include a discussion of challenges associated with conducting workplace investigations remotely. - Labor Law Invades the HR World
After decades of union activity decline, the recent shift in focus of the NLRB into the private sector cannot be ignored. This session will identify key areas in which employers should anticipate and prepare for change with respect to organizational policies, practices, and issues that were typically not considered to be in the realm of HR and employment law.
There are some non-legal concurrent sessions that can be viewed on the host's event webpage.
This conference will help you avoid legal risk before it arises by staying current with the latest changes in labor legislation and earn you credits toward maintaining your valuable certification. We hope to see you there!
