Supreme Court Finds District Could Not Restrict Coach’s Private Prayer at 50-Yard Line
This event is being rescheduled to September.
On June 27, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to overturn the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, finding that the Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment protected high school football coach Joseph Kennedy’s practice of praying at the 50-yard line immediately after football games, and that on the highly disputed facts of that case the Constitution neither mandated nor permitted the school district to stop the coach’s religious expression.
Join us as Partners Mark Bresee and Marlon Wadlington discuss the Bremerton decision, practical tips to address the potential impact of the decision on local school districts, and the liability implications facing school districts regarding employee religious and political expression in the presence of students.
