CalPERS Audits: Are You Prepared?

CalPERS’ Office of Audit Services conducts regular audits of its contracting agencies to ensure that they are correctly enrolling members and accurately reporting all required information.  Identifying issues before an audit can save your agency time, trouble, and money.  CalPERS audits routinely uncover liability in the following areas:  salary schedules, special compensation, retired annuitants, part-time or temporary employees, and independent contractors.  This presentation will explain the CalPERS review process, including the initial contact, the engagement letter, the entrance conference, the planning, the fieldwork, the post-fieldwork, the exit conference, the quality review, the final report, the corrective action plan, and the appeals.  We will also help you to identify and address the most common audit findings so that you will have the tools to prepare for, respond to, and address audit findings.  Particular focus will be paid to the issue of independent contractors, especially in light of the recent Dynamex decision.  We will discuss the application of this decision to retirement issues, as well as the traditional approach that CalPERS continues to use in deciding whether an individual is an independent contractor or an employee.
