Starting February 20, 2009, many federal contractors and subcontractors performing work in the United States may be required to start using E-Verify to verify the work authorization status of their new hires and existing employees assigned to federal contracts. The rule was originally scheduled to become effective January 15, 2009, but as discussed below, a lawsuit was recently filed seeking an injunction of the new rule. As a result, the government agreed to delay implementation of the new rule until February 20, to allow the court more time to consider the issue.
